Unfriendly Fire
How the gay ban undermines the military and weakens America

Daily Show-bound!

I’ve made it to NYC safe and sound on the red-eye. My San Diego talk on Saturday had drawn about 35 diverse people to the city’s warm and welcoming Gay and Lesbian Community Center where I spoke for about half an hour and led a spirited discussion for another hour. We had people of every age and background including a blind gay octogenarian vet who

asked me to please release my book on tape so he could read it. I said I’d look into it and would also be inspired to do so for my 97-year-old Bubbie who can’t read books anymore.

I then told the story of when Bubbie found a 13-year-old girl from the neighborhood to volunteer to read to her, and I was touched that they began reading “Unfriendly Fire.” When the two ladies encountered “unnatural carnal copulation” on page 9, Bubbie quickly swapped the book out with one the girl “might like a little better” and they carried on reading something that was age-appropriate for them both. I honestly didn’t think I’d written a dirty book!

My visit to San Diego was warm and beautiful, and I enjoyed the train ride from L.A. that hugs the Pacific coast, eating outside in the sunshine, and spending my Sunday on “Doggie Beach” in Del Mar, north of the city. After taking the dog to the beach, we gave her a lavender bath at South Bark with a blueberry facial and hot oil treatment. It was fun to be in South Bark after hours, where my host, Jenny, is a groomer. Jenny and her husband, David, were gracious and accommodating hosts.

Don’t forget to tune into the Daily Show tonight on Comedy Central, where I’ll be the guest!

I’m so jealous of all you east coasters who have now seen the Daily Show…I still have to wait another few hours for it to be aired here. But, in the meantime, I was so happy to see the additions to the blog. We loved having you here, but were happy to send you back to NYC to Jon Stewart. I’m sure you were great, can’t wait to see it for myself!

Nathaniel, you did a fantastic job on the Daily Show tonight! You made us all proud. Now we just need Obama to bring you to Washington to help bury the policy once and for all.
